dialog boxes attempting to remove table borders

Simple stuff.  Added a table, tried to make borders invisible.  Whatever you set in "table properties" is not saved.  Default values come up the next time you go into "table properties" - not saved.

Apparently no way to make table borders invisible.

Try uncheck View > Boundaries.
