Slightly out of scope here. I'm also not big fan of the sentences in the welcome screen ending with a 'dot'. Similar to bug 166588, but that one is about the Window Title. It doesn't feel right somehow.
It's the default font with a size of 24px in bold and dark. -1 to any other font (which might not be available on any OS/DE)
I'm not sure that it's the font itself, rather, the combined effect of the graphic.

Your bug delineates my feeling about the appeal of the Welcome dialog pretty well. I assumed it to be the font, but it might not be the case.
