Description Ryan Johnson 2025-06-11 23:33:39 UTC
Description:
Please rename LibreOffice Calc to something else. It conflicts with 'calculator' app on Windows. Searching the start menu for 'calc' will always default to the calculator if a person uses it. Searching for "Libre" will always default to LibreOffice Writer, because it is a more commonly-used app. Moreover, even if these were not more commonly used, I would want a clear way to always launch LibreOffice Calc, Writer, and Calculator apps, without overwriting their priority in the search results. Give Calc a unique name.

Something like LibreOffice Cell. or LibreOffice Spread, or LibreOffice Sheet (like Google), or LibreOffice Table.

Steps to Reproduce:
Rename Calc

Actual Results:
Rename Calc

Expected Results:
Rename Calc

Reproducible: Always

The "Calc" ODF Spreadsheet module of LibreOffice has been called that since the StarOffice era so 40 years! However an actual launcher for use on Windows builds has actually been "scalc.exe" since that same era.

You can make a Windows Start Menu and/or Taskbar assignment if you like.

Or just use the Windows search bar and type scalc.

Interesting. I would not ever expect anyone to know this out of the box, so it's still in the interest of everyone to rename to another name.

That 'scalc' hack is what we call undiscoverable, and is therefore not a solution in the slightest.

Leave this open. Let people see and comment, and then we shall see how intuitive this report is.

So what is the problem with "You can make a Windows Start Menu and/or Taskbar assignment if you like"? Pretty standard operating system management stuff, right?

And on Windows builds from before the StarOffice era it has always had a "unique" command name--scalc

And since you ask after a Windows os/DE conflict, the Windows 11 "Best match" for a 'calc' search entry is the MS Calculator App!

The best match for 'scalc' is obviously the Calc LO module.

Discoverable and our LO legacy, no reason to adjust.

IMHO this remains a clear => WF if not flat out => INVALID
