In Calc, when we press Alt-Shift-Right, the column expands to fir the active cell (or soon, current selection of cells), and Alt-Shift-Left does some column contraction.

What happens when we switch the direction?

... well, the exact same thing, except now Right is directed towards contraction, and Left towards expansion, so the semantics are counter-intuitive.
