Description saerdem 2025-08-06 17:13:44 UTC
Description:
I’ve been a long-time office suite user (Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs etc.), and I’ve noticed a usability issue in LibreOffice Writer.

When selecting only a specific part of a paragraph (e.g. a sentence or a few words), and applying formatting like center alignment, LibreOffice sometimes applies this to the entire paragraph or even to the paragraph style, instead of just the selected part.

This behavior breaks with expected user habits and violates basic ease-of-use principles. In most modern word processors, users assume that formatting actions apply only to the selected text, unless they explicitly choose to change a style.

While I understand and respect that styles are a core concept in LibreOffice, direct formatting should only affect the local content, and not modify global styles or the rest of the document — unless the user clearly intends to do so.

Request: Please consider improving this behavior, or at least provide a warning or visual feedback when a local formatting action causes global style changes. That would make LibreOffice significantly more intuitive, usable, and trustworthy — especially for users migrating from other office software.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open LibreOffice Writer
2. Type a paragraph of text
3. Select only a part of the paragraph (e.g. one sentence or a few words)
4. Click the "Center alignment" button from the formatting toolbar

Actual Results:
The entire paragraph becomes centered, or the paragraph style is changed. Sometimes this affects other parts of the document using the same style.

Expected Results:
Only the selected text should be centered. The rest of the paragraph and document should remain unaffected, unless the user explicitly modifies the style.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
This behavior may confuse users coming from Word or Google Docs, where formatting applies only to selected content unless a style is explicitly modified. It negatively impacts usability and user trust in formatting behavior.

Please explain better what is intended.

With Word, selecting part of a paragraph and applying, center alignment, it applies to the whole paragraph. How it could be applied only for the selected text?
