Luckily you can enter a value/unit combination like "1 pt" which converts to the configured locale, eg. 0.03cm. Usability wise this is not easy to understand and I proposed a UI solution via right click context menu in bug 72662. It was (correctly) criticized as micro-management. Another approach might be to store the last used unit per entry, and have some sensible default. I agree with point for line thickness.

FWIW: (A) the sidebar uses point, so it's inconsistent UI wise. (B) Drawing a shape, which has a border by default, shows a border thickness of 0,00cm.
