Description Shantanu 2025-09-15 04:20:25 UTC
Description:
If I select all dictionaries during the Custom installation of LibreOffice, several languages are pre-installed. For example, I am able to type in Hindi and use the spell-check functionality without any issues. However, certain other Indian languages, such as Kannada, are not installed even though they are mentioned in the release notes.

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Special:MyLanguage/ReleaseNotes/25.8#Improvements_to_proofing_tools_and_language_support

These languages cannot be selected in the Custom Installation dialog box as shown in the attached screen shot.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use custom installation
2. In custom Installation select "Dictionaries" from Optional Components.

Actual Results:
There is no Kannada Language in the list

Expected Results:
Kannada along with other languages like Punjabi, Oriya, Sanskrit, Assamese, Tamil, and Marathi should be listed as mentioned in the Release Note.

Reproducible: Always

In 25.8's Release Notes:

it says it added 5 languages:

> Improvements to proofing tools and language support
>
> Spell check dictionaries and hyphenation rules were added for the languages: Punjabi, Oriya, Sanskrit, Kannada, and Assamese.

But, if you go to the MSI installer and do a "Custom Install"...

"Kannada" doesn't seem to appear under:

- Optional Components > Dictionary

but I DO SEE "Kannada" appearing under the:

- User Interface Languages

- - -

Relevant Links?

And here is the exact History info of that exact "Kannada" (kn_IN) dictionary folder:

Just 4 months ago, there was a fix by Andras Timar:

which said:

> Kannada: add missing integration files
>
> Without these files the dictionary would not appear in LibreOffice and would not be used.
> Without modifying Module_dictionaries.mk the dictionary would not be even built.

So it looks like there is a DIC + AFF file for kn_IN...

... but I don't see "Kannada" appearing in LO 25.8.1 installer OR the latest 26.2.0 daily (2025-06-12).

So something else might be going on with packaging some of those OTHER dictionary languages too.

There might be more discussion in the original topic here:

The OP's original issue was Kannada not appearing in:

- Tools > Spelling
- "Text Language" dropdown

but the root cause is... because there was no Kannada Dictionary at all! :P

Small typo. I meant 2025-09-12.
