Description Pierre Fortin 2025-10-21 12:57:59 UTC
When user clicks on "Files of Type" in the Open dialog, please limit the choice(s) to the type(s) of file(s) actually in the currently selected folder. The current display of over 180 file types makes this feature virtually useless.

If the current FULL list of types has an overarching reason for existing, then a new "Files of type present" would be a great time saver (who has time to read through the current massive list?). Alternatively, boldface, color, or otherwise flag the types actually available in the selected folder.

Thanks.

File open filter selections (Win build of master against 26.2.0)

The listing of available filters is already organized to reduce visual clutter.

Initial grouping for supported file types of each module:

Text documents
Spreadsheets
Presentation
Drawings
Web pages
Master documents
Formulas
Database documents

The a more detailed selection of filters for each LO module.

I.e. next is filters for formats opened into Writer. And etc.

See no reason to adjust, it is highly navigable already.

which one ?

see https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/shared/optionen/01010600.html (although it's incomplete ;)

indeed on ubuntu/gtk3 the default dialog is almost useless.
LO one is slightly better, displaying file extensions and reacting to keyboard letters. could indeed have submenus.
Comment 3 Pierre Fortin 2025-10-22 15:58:59 UTC
Agreed. The default open menu is the one I reported.
After checking the Use LibreOfficeDev dialogs, the menu is definitely better (more intelligence used in creating it :)
Thanks for the clue. I will stick with the LO menus.
Your choice if you like the suggestion of showing only types of available files in the current directory. I work with thousands of files where it would help greatly for this selector to show only the available file types.
Speaking of "files", it would be great to have a check box to hide directories (only show files); because this system has over 11M files/directories:
$ ls -Rf / | wc -l
11236118

Going to mark this for Linux builds then and dependent on desktop environment (DE) handling.

The os/DE provided File filters list for Windows builds is as shown in attachment 203476 [details], it replicates the list of filters LibreOffice build provides, so no real difference on this DE.

Is this request the same as bug 115285? Which itself is a duplicate of bug 94177.
