If you check Format -> Spotlight menu, you can see the only item relate do direct formatting is Character Direct Formatting.

Indeed, when that is turned on, if you turn a whole paragraph eg. bold, no indication of the direct formatting is shown. Since that is also direct formatting, the tool could be extended to show it.

In the attached screenshot in order:
- "Abcdef" is unformatted,
- bold "abcdef" has paragraph direct formatting,
- "abcdef" with bold "cd" - "cd" has character direct formatting,
- bold "abcdef" then unbolded "cd" - "abcdef" has paragraph direct formatting, "cd" has character direct formatting,
- bold "abcdef" then clear direct formatting on "cd" - "ab" and "ef" have character direct formatting.

Isn't a paragraph with direct formatting of its style already signified by cross hatching? Why would that not suffice?

Fair enough, I Guess the naming of the option is just not descriptive enough, but it does that. Thanks for pointing it out!
