Description Telesto 2025-11-16 12:06:07 UTC
Description:
UI: Use icon buttons for table alignment types instead of label

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Writer
2. Insert a table
3. Menu -> Table -> Properties -> Table Tab

Actual Results:
There is caption: alignment. I tend to 'associate' alignment with text alignment. So think, way maybe some setting to define the 'text alignment' for the full table.

Expected Results:
Some better way of communicating what the 'alignment' means. Maybe be using icons like Word

Also 'Automatic' doesn't seem to be an 'alignment' It feels more like fit table to page margins. So increasing the page width after insertion of the table will increase table width. Although same - in my perception - by achieved by checking 'relative'

Reproducible: Always

@Eyal
More a conversion starter. I personally find the table alignment part of the table properties rather complicated. It's (a) somehow off and (b) feels complicated. However I'm not sure what I dislike exactly

* Function being called alignment, instead of 'table alignment'. In tend to 'confuse' this with text alignment (within the table)
* Automatic alignment being an option. Is automatic truly an alignment function? "Automatic' will - automatically - change into 'left' when moving the outer table border(s) inwards by drag and drop
* Automatic being some genetic name: far from self-explaining. Although, I'm lacking an alternative. Maybe None (No explicit defined alignment)
* Lack of preview (how will it look)
* The only thing the radio buttons do: disabling an input field. So it's exactly the same as using manual without changing the value. So the options are only some assistance which type of alignment you have? Or does it do something more advanced?
* Are the radio buttons the proper choice? Makes a drop down not more sense? Although I prefer icons (like Word). Don't need to be that large. Background tab line -arrangement tab - has also previews

I believe this is a duplicate of my bug 145980. Would you agree?

Also:

* The screenshot is from MS Word, right? Please rename it to indicate exactly what it's a shot of. Say which version, too, please.
* Right-Center-Left don't cut it these days, now that we have support for Start and End alignments (see bug 118350). So, I've filed bug 169484.
