Created attachment 204746 [details] new option added into the user settings Currently, "Windows Updates is committed to helping reduce carbon emissions". I propose that the automatic update of LibreOffice provides such a feature by focussing on renewable electricity. Basically, renewable electricity is more consensual than low carbon electricity (the later adds a few additional primary sources to the renewable primary sources). Libreoffice could use a forecast service in order to choose the daily period for the update tasks when there is more renewable electricity. If this forecast service isn't available, then it could fallback to the solar zenith period by using the local time zone. Since the daily period wouldn't be the same in all regions of a continent, this would help to distribute the charge to the download servers. Within the selected period, the updater could still add an random delay. I attached a proposition in order to see this choice into the user settings.
Lovely sentiment, just not feasible for a globally delivered application on a distributed Mirror network. -1 => WF

Created attachment 204748 [details] new options added into the user settings Taking into account the comment #1 by deselecting the feature by default for the download step.
To follow the ideology of Microsoft would be an incredible nonsense. We are the carbon they want to reduce.
It seems the smart electrical grid wasn't invented by Microsoft. It would be better than Windows Updates since it would prioritize renewable electricity. Just let you imagine this scenario : 1. As currently, the updates are checked for example each week. 2. If an update is available, the updates files can be downloaded as currently. 3. Once the updates files are ready for installation, then the automatic update requests to a simple service the best time period for installation (or fall back to a zenith period relying on local time). If installation has not been completed within 24 hours, it reverts to the usual installation time frame.
(In reply to Jérôme from comment #5) Actually, with current MAR based incremental updates this whole user "check for updates" mechanism is deprecated and the update check occurs on LibreOffice launch. Currently Windows builds only, but when finalized the MAR based incremental updates will be fully configurable and can be suppressed, or placed under admin control and likely support local delivery--giving users/admins full control of the process. Beyond that, this eco-frienly power consumption/reduce carbon footprint sentiment is out of scope for the LibreOffice project. No justification to expend project resources or developer effort to pursue--the LibreOffice "footprint" is not heavy.
Change in operating system field, as Linux version 24.8 also has this feature.

The wiki tells that MAR incremental updates is behind the option available (non experimental since 24.8) in : "Tools ▸ Options... ▸ LibreOffice ▸ Online Update ▸ Automatic Update ▸ Enable automatic update". See : https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Online_Update I understand that an organization can take the hand on the update mechanism. Will this feature also be removed from domestic use ? I agree that this feature could have a lower priority. Maybe it could get a difficultyBeginner keyword ? Since LibreOffice has roughly up to 800000 downloads per week, the install process has a significant impact on electricity consumption (and thus electricity production).
