Description Bob Harvey 2026-01-28 13:28:48 UTC
Description:
I have started to get, after a recent update, a dialogue from Windows UAC, asking for permission to run updater.exe. The first time it did, indeed, do some sort of update - I am now on 25.8.2.2

But it keeps coming. Today I had to open the calc spreadsheet 3 times in as many minutes, and I got this dialogue every time. That's rather more frequent than sensible. It has become intrusive.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open any component

Actual Results:
the UAC dialogue takes over the desktop and has to be dismissed

Expected Results:
The dialogue should only appear if an actual update has to be done - check first, then launch the updater (which launches the UAC dialogue)

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Automatic updates are set up at:
Menu>Tools>Options>LibreOffice>Online update

Was LibreOffice installed with administration right?

I have never seen such a screen.

Please test in safe mode, Menu/Help/Restart in Safe Mode

I just ran the installer as a user.

I would not install as an admin, that seems to be most insecure

I just tried the safe mode tip, and got the same dialogue. Twice in succession. The app closed, I got the two dialogues, then the app opened.

message in safe mode

I then closed the thing because I don't want to alter my setup

So, what did the update.exe do?

Having twice started calc today, and seen three UAC dialogues, I discover that the app says there is an update available.

So does updater.exe actually update anything? or does it just check for updates?

Because if it is just checking, why does it trigger this UAC dialogue?

result of clicking on the update available icon

OK, further to my last comment, I just opened calc again - (of course, I got the UAC dialogue for updater.exe). But this time I also got a progress bar from LO about doing an update, so it is obviously doing something - but the same icon about having an update available is on the button bar again.

So I got a progress bar for downloading an update, but I have to go and do it manually? what is going on?
