Description David Nelson 2010-10-07 03:28:31 UTC
I am usually proofreading and translating documents, and overwriting
text. I hide the formatting toolbar. But when the insertion point
enters a table or a bulleted list, the Bullets and Numbering toolbar
and the Table toolbar appear (I have them detached from the toolbar
area at the top of the window). They are generally inconveniently
positioned over text I want to see. If I hide them, they pop up next
time I enter another table/list. The hiding action is not "sticky",
and I don't find any configuration setting to control this behavior.

The current behavior is OK *maybe* when you're actually writing the
doc, but I find it a nuisance when you're subsequently reviewing it (a
more-common event in the life of a doc?)

My feature request to be able to durably
switch toolbars off, individually, via a pane in Tools/Options, so
that they don't sporadically display, either when floated or docked...
Then you'd just switch them on and off manually via View/Toolbars when you need them...

In any case, more power to you guys, and thanks for your valuable work. :-)

Hi David,

Thanks for posting. You write:
"My feature request to be able to durably switch toolbars off"

Actually, that is possible already for toolbars
  Table,
  Bullets and Numbering and
  Picture
It works as follows:
If the toolbar is visible because the focus is in a table, or paragraph with B/N, or on a picture, chose View > Toolbar > .. and check it off.
Then it will not appear automatically the next time.

HTH,
Cor

@ Cor: no, this doesn't really work. I am reviewing a document with changes: accept or reject, and whenever I open the "changes: accept or reject" window, the Navigation toolbar (which is a joke anyway, a toolbar with only 2 buttons) pops up again, taking away precious screen estate.

Is there a way to **to durably switch toolbars ON**, e.g. make the Table toolbar always visible and not go away when I stop editing a table?
Comment 5 Jean-Baptiste Faure 2014-05-01 19:55:11 UTC
Closing again as WorksForMe because:
1/ toolbars can be docked on the side of the window and they reopen in the same location.
2/ Navigation toolbar can be docked in the main toolbar
3/ Several toolbars open by default docked at the bottom side of the window (search bar for example).

If you think that it remains some usability problem with toolbar positioning in current stable version (4.1 and 4.2 branches), please file a new bug report.
Best regards.
