Description Paul 2011-03-28 02:44:30 UTC
Hello,

This is a request for an enhancement to the "Save As" functionality in the libreoffice suite of applications. "Save As" should optionally default to the current file type.

Steps to reproduce in writer:

1) Open .doc file, .txt file, .odf file, etc
2) "Save As"

Expected results: Selected filetype for saving matches filetype of current document.

Actual results: Selected filetype defaults to ".odf" or whichever filetype is set in the Save options.

I work with various formats, and often (daily) need to save them as new versions. I can only choose one Save As filetype, whereas it would be far less frustrating if the Save As defaulted filetype matched the filetype of the current file. I very rarely want to convert the document, it is in the format it is in for a reason.

This enhancement would result in something like a "Save As retains current format" checkbox in the options.

Thanks,

Paul

This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.
Details on how to test the 3.5.0 beta1 can be found at:

I might not have been clear enough in the description.

In the Options / Load/Save dialog there is an option to select the "Always save as" type for Text Documents, Spreadsheets, etc.

So if you are doing a Save As, then this option is honored.

This bug is an enhancement request so that there is an option in this drop down that says "Current Format", or an option to disable the "Always Save As" functionality altogether and so the current format is assumed.

It cannot be that this enhancement "Worksforme" because if you open a .doc and choose save as, it will choose the option in the "Save As".

If you are getting the behavior where it does save as the current type, then you have identified a bug, as that is not the current functionality - it should save as what is defined in the "always save as" field.

I see the behavior described in the comment 2 also with LO-3.4. I mean that it behaves as requested by this bug and honors the current format.

I like this behavior. I do not see any bug report about it => people probably like it.

=> we should just fix the "Always save as" option. I would rename it to "Default save as" and update help to describe the current behavior.

Christoph, Thorsten, any complains?

I have done a bit more testing, and the issue I am seeing is on linux, the Windows version does as described in comment 2.

This is several versions on Gentoo linux, all in the three series (same behavior in openoffice versions before libreoffice came into being).

I am testing on gentoo x86, and will try on Debian wheezy to see if is is distribution related.

If anyone else looking at this request is on Gentoo could they confirm the behaviour?
Comment 7 Petr Mladek 2012-01-25 05:59:09 UTC
I the behavior mentioned in the comment 2 on Linux (SLED11-SP1).

I think that the version might be more important than the vendor. We most likely changed the behavior between LO-3.3 and LO-3.4.

Paul, are you testing LO-3.3? I suggest you to switch to LO-3.4.
Comment 8 Paul 2012-01-25 15:29:21 UTC
I have seen this behavior in every version I have used, including 3.5 - all of the libreoffice versions released on gentoo, plus all openoffice releases (I don't recall the first one I used).

Given than no one else has mentioned this or remembers seeing it, I am beginning to think it might be local to my install.

That's been applied now. Tested on LO 4.0.4.2 (Win7 32bit)

Please REOPENED if you think different
