FILEOPEN treats gnumeric files as csv files and creates junk. Openoffice had no problem with gnumeric files.
Reproduced with Ubuntu 10.04.2 x86 LO 3.4
Please attach a Testfile. With 3.4.1 and Suse 11.3 I has no problems.

[This is an automated message.] This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases. Details on how to test the 3.5.0 beta1 can be found at: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/BugHunting_Session_3.5.0.-1 more detail on this bulk operation: http://nabble.documentfoundation.org/RFC-Operation-Spamzilla-tp3607474p3607474.html
needinfo keyword redundant by needinfo status.
What version of oocalc supported this? Based on [1] it seems to have been a longstanding wish that no one had implemented. [1] https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=17808
With Libreoffice 4.0 we'll have an technical demo for gnumeric import. It is still in alpha state and only imports values, strings and formulas right now. This will be only accessible through the experimental mode and does not support gnumeric files that don't have the namespace alias gnm. These limitations will be removed later.
Shall this bug be closed or renamed to "Remove limitations of Gnumeric import filter (currently in Experimental Mode)"?
test file still fails to be opened in LibO 4.1.4.2 under Win7 64bit it loads in Writer and shows this junk: #‹##Ä#}N##í#moã6ïûý Í#¶Om#§é]½&‡ôú# íS$ioÏ
Created attachment 92377 [details] Same file as plain XML (In reply to comment #9) > it loads in Writer and shows this junk: > #‹##Ä#}N##í#moã6ïûý > Í#¶Om#§é]½&‡ôú# íS$ioÏ That's because it's gzipped. I attached the same file as plain XML.

With liborcus version 0.19.0, this should be fixed. https://cgit.freedesktop.org/libreoffice/core/commit/?id=a593e018d4e3033ae95353a5ac3063a8c651a158
