Description Rainer Bielefeld Retired 2011-05-16 23:09:15 UTC
Especially for multi-column-sections with unchecked "Evenly distributecontents to all columns" it's rather unintuitive how to reach second (or further) columns (Bug 37245 - Make 2nd column selection more intuitive for unchecked "Evenly distribute text").

I believe it would be useful to have 'Insert Column Break' in the context menu when clicking into such an area. Most users try a right click if they don't know they should continue.

I do not know whether there are other plans / specifications how to improve handling.

Thanks for new idea. I agree that idea is good.

PS: users also use field "CC list" for voting. This method is quick and simple, though not precise.

I would agree (reproducible with LO 4.4.0.0.beta1).

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open WRITER
2. Go to INSERT -> SECTION -> tab COLUMNS
3. Uncheck "Evenly Distribute Contents To All Columns" and select the three column section and click INSERT
4. Write any word and now try to get to the second column

-> Impossible to get to the next columns with a left mouse click or the right mouse click context menu, this is not intuitive and the user gets stuck and maybe frustrated

contextmenu section

It's definitely not a intuitive behavior.

attached you see how it will look when you have it in the context menu. But there is another issue. this item is shown not only when you are in an section area. but that can be fixed.

In general I don't think it's good UX that you can't switch to another section by mouse.

Don't see the issue here. If the page has columns you also can't go to the second column when there is no text or a manual break. Similarly, you cannot go to the second page without adding a page break.

We do not list special breaks in any context menu. The user has to know the short cut or use the main menu. So it's also not required here.

My take: WFM

OK for me.

( I would think of adding Ctrl+Shift+Enter for column break, but see that it already is there (obviously I seldom work in columns :p ) )

We discussed the topic in the design meeting and agreed on WFM.
