1) lsb_release -rd
 Description: Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
 Release: 11.10

2) apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer
libreoffice-writer:
  Installed: 1:3.4.2-2ubuntu3
  Candidate: 1:3.4.2-2ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.4.2-2ubuntu3 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What is expected to happen in LibreOffice Writer via the Terminal:

cd ~/Desktop && wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/525717/+attachment/2369876/+files/example.odt && lowriter -nologo example.odt

when one uses the mouse and selects the blue text → clicks Format Paintbrush → selects “jumps over” in the green text, only those two words have their format changed.

4) What happens instead is “jumps over” changed to the desired formatting but the font, font color, and size of the words to the left and right, as well as the paragraph justification changed to Default Formatting.

WORKAROUND: Use the mouse and select the blue text → click Format Paintbrush → press and hold the Ctrl key -> select “jumps over” in the green text then let go.

Effect is reproducible with reporter's sample document and Server installation of Master "LibO-dev 3.5.0 – WIN7 Home Premium (64bit) English UI [(Build ID: d3d1481-3f8994a-2ba0a9f)]", but I think it's not a feature

Steps to reproduce:
1. open sample document
2. select word "formatted in first line with double click
3. Click 'Format Paintbrush' icon
Mouse pointer view changes to "ink bottle"
4. Click before word "jumps" in the next line, select until end of word "over"
   with pushed left mouse button
5 Release left mouse button
Expected: 1. Character format (Arial 16, blue) will be transferred to the
               selected characters
            2. Paragraph style (Default, Justified) will be transferred to the
               new paragraph
Actual: 1. As expected: "jumps over" becomes Arial 16, blue
          2. As expected: Paragraph becomes "Default" (TNR 12 + "justified")

So there is no bug.

Source for "Expected behavior":
a) Manual "Writer Guide - Word Processing with LibreOffice 3.3"
b) Writer Help under heading "Copying Formatting With the Format Paintbrush"

Please feel free to reopen the bug if you can cite Manuals or Help that promise other behavior.

Rainer Bielefeld, I agree with you this is not a bug. As per: http://help.libreoffice.org/Common/Copying_Attributes_With_the_Format_Paintbrush when "Text is selected" it is noted that it "Copies the formatting of the last selected character and of the paragraph that contains the character." While the default action is not intuitive, the WORKAROUND does give one the opportunity to achieve the expected results. Thank you for looking at this.
