Description Mohith Manoj 2011-09-19 01:19:24 UTC
I need to consolidate data available in a spreadsheet (with multiple sheets). Each sheet in the spreadsheet has a chart object and its source data. I insert this spreadsheet as an OLE object in an Impress document with area of the OLE object set to display the chart only. I insert more OLE objects in additional slides to add charts from all the sheets.
All works however if I open the spreadsheet, make some modification (without moving or resizing the chart objects) and save the CALC document, the view in my IMPRESS document of all OLE objects gets reset to the view of spreadsheet as it looked while closing.
There should be a method to lock the area of the target document which is required in the OLE reference.

[This is an automated message.]
This bug was filed before the changes to Bugzilla on 2011-10-16. Thus it
started right out as NEW without ever being explicitly confirmed. The bug is
changed to state NEEDINFO for this reason. To move this bug from NEEDINFO back
to NEW please check if the bug still persists with the 3.5.0 beta1 or beta2 prereleases.
Details on how to test the 3.5.0 beta1 can be found at:

Hi Mohith, is it still happen on latest stable release?

If no, please attach sample file & explain how to see that problem. Then mark this bug UNCONFIRMED.
Comment 4 Mohith Manoj 2013-06-22 03:44:06 UTC
Yep.. its still there with LO 4.0.4.2

To reproduce the issue,
1) Download the attachments
2) Open the presentation and take a note of what the inserted OLE object looks like.
3) Close the presentation.
4) Open the spreadsheet.
5) Switch to the other sheet if you see the same chart as you saw in the presentation.
6) Change one of the numbers in the chart data.
7) Save the spreadsheet document and close it.
8) Open the presentation. You'll be prompted to sync with the spreadsheet.
  a) Yes: You won't be seeing what you saw in step 2 anymore!
  b) No: Presentation contains old data.

We still need some confirmations:

> 6) Change one of the numbers in the chart data.
Chart in Sheet1 or Sheet2 ?

> 8) Open the presentation. You'll be prompted to sync with the spreadsheet.
> a) Yes: You won't be seeing what you saw in step 2 anymore!
> b) No: Presentation contains old data.
Please attach screenshot of what is expected & unexpected.

This isn't a bug, it's behaving as it's supposed to. The OLE object is linked to the data, if you change the data, the graph should (and does) change according to the change. If you click "no" then it uses the data from the spreadsheet prior to any changes.

This is not a bug therefore marking as NOTABUG

Reading the description - I am less confident this is the bug you are reporting.

but...

8) Open the presentation. You'll be prompted to sync with the spreadsheet.
  a) Yes: You won't be seeing what you saw in step 2 anymore!

If you're just saying the chart looks different - this is expected. If you are saying something else - well then we need clarification. Instead marking as NEEDINFO

I am sorry I was not able to explain the issue clearly. I know exactly what is supposed to happen when you do OLE with link to source; any change made to the data in the original document would reflect in the documents where I have inserted it.

Say I'm creating this spreadsheet with some data and creating a chart there itself (because I don't like the way they are created in Impress). Since I want this chart ot be presented, I insert the spreadsheet as an OLE object (with link option checked) into a presentation. Then I double click on the object and align such that only the chart area of the presentation is seen.

You are right that if I modify the original data in the data, the chart there would change and so should the presentation when I open it the next time. But tell me this, why should the OLE object in the presentaion should show some other area of the spreadsheet if I had scrolled the spreadsheet (using the horizontal / vertical scroll bars on the right / bottom side of the window) or added one more sheet before saving it the last time?

This bug probably needs someone like Regina Henschel to comment on whether OLE is supported in the required manner by ODF. My reading of ODF v1.2, Part 1, 10.4.6, which covers OLE and the draw:object and draw:object-ole elements would seem to indicate that it is not.

Basically the draw:object element in this instances has a xlink:href attribute that points to the entire file (package), rather than some sort of predefined area or object within the file. Ideally, the link should be to the chart object within the file (somewhat like when inserting a hyperlink to an object within a document) but this is not currently supported. Perhaps an enhancement request?
