Original template for grades

The contents of certain .ods files I have are utterly deleted when saved, either as new files or as simple changes to the same file.

I am a graduate student, and received an .xls file from my department as a template for recording grades (see attachment: grades.xls). It contains macros that automatically calculate the final grade from the assignment grades.

A while ago I had converted it to an .ods file, and went on my way recording grades. This worked just fine when I was using the 3.3 series of LibreOffice (and before, and even OpenOffice before that). When I most recently returned to it and edited it, I found that what it saved was a blank file - all the data and formating was gone as far as I can tell (thankfully I had a backup!). I went back to the original .xls template and saved it as an .ods, and sure enough, all information is lost (see: grades.ods). If I try to edit this new .ods and save it, an error message appears: "Error saving the document grades: Write Error. The file could not be written."

One way I can get the contents of the .xls file into an .ods is to create a new .ods and copy and paste the contents. I can then save it and still be able use the file properly. (It also doesn't warn me of the file containing macros when started.)

I am running LibreOffice 3.4.3 on Ubuntu 10.10, though the problem is also present in 3.4.2. The 3.3 series did not have this problem.

Apologies if a similar bug has been filed before, though I could not find one.

I do not see any difference between grades.xls and grades.ods when I open both files in LibreOffice 3.4.3 (Ubuntu 3.4.3 and 3.3.2).
Please, can you provide more details about data that are lost?

Best regards. JBF

That... is really odd, since the two files look quite different for me! The .ods file is totally void of any content. Here are links to two screenshots, the first of the original (xls) files, and the second of ods file that was created when I saved the xls as an ods.

Thanks for looking into my problem.

Hmm, I just did a test on a friend's computer using OpenOffice 3.1.1. Indeed, grades.ods had all its content, macros and all!

As a futher test, I installed LibreOffice 3.3.4 on my computer - but it also does not show the contents of the .ods file saved by the 3.4 series. If I open the original .xls and save it as an .ods file with the 3.3 series, however, that new .ods file does show all the content. In addition, LibreOffice 3.4.3 can also view this new file just fine; however, once it saves any chances, neither the 3.3 series nor the 3.4 series on my computer displays any content.

So the data is apparently not erased at all, which is great. That said, I'm quite confused as to why my system does not display the files properly. Hope this is clear...

I still have this problem with 3.4.3, but this time in a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10. I don't really understand why the contents would display on some computers and not others.
