This issue still persists in version 3.5.0, but only regarding copy/paste. Importing works as expected.

LibreOffice 3.5.0rc1 350m1(Build:11) Reproduced. This bug affects many others see: #33114, #36097, #36098, #38434 (which field to fill "Depends on" or "Blocks"?) The cause is: The program with the image source puts this image into the clipboard. It provides various formats ("image/png", "image/bmp", ...). LibreOffice is only able to paste "Bitmaps" not pngs nor other advanced formats (it certainly can import them, but that is an other story!) This is a BUG and leads to a black background by pasting or by using drag&drop.
