This is a feature would be very handy for students like myself. I use LibreOffice and to show videos without opening a browser I have to download the video and convert it. It would be nice to have under the Insert menu a embed video option where one could paste a youtube video url or dailymotion, vimeo etc. Almost all presentations these days in schools and universities include a youtube video of some sort. Libreoffice is being ported to Android and the Web. I can't see many android users going to Libreoffice over Google Docs if they can't embed a youtube video on a slide.

Sasha can you tell us about the regression? Was it once possible to embed and play perfectly? If so, when ? Regression with playing video on Windows. Steps to reproduce: 0. Start Impress 1. Insert->Movie and Sound, select video file 2. Press F5 IMHO it was working in 3.4 version. I can not verify it in summer On Linux video not working for long time
I set this request from NEEDINFO to NEW, because Conner asked about embed a video from an online source to LibreOffice Impress, without downloading it. Just like you would embed a Youtube video to your own blog or website.
Additional explanations: "Download" means that video appears completely in odp file. So that user can copy odp document (without other files) to another computer without Internet connection and it will work properly. This means that LibreOffice should have video-downloader functionality. IMHO it is good idea.
@Sasha: Do you think, a "Video Downloader" in LibreOffice is really necessary? LibreOffice supports inserting .flv video files (at least from LO 4.1. onwards). This means that the user simply needs to download the video file form the website and insert it. This is IMHO not too complicated. In my opinion, more important is the possibility to embed videos in the presentation like one would embed an (e.g. youtube) video in a blog or website. This simply links to the internet source, but displays it in the blog (or in our case in the presentation).
1. Often appears situation when computer with connected projector appears without Internet. Therefore without preliminary downloading video users will encounter problem with demonstrating presentation. 2. It would be very useful to give to users ability to automatically download all videos and embed them for not depend from Internet connection in future. 3. At least should be indicated that Internet connection is necessary for correct working of video. (At least so it looks for me according to my practice in demonstrating different presentations)

What Word 2013 does when you select an online video from their builtin search facility to add into a document is insert the video's image and wrap a link around it pointing to the page you can watch the video as well as the necessary embedded HTML code to run the video independently. Here is an example of the xml code with the embedded HTML (pulled from attachment 111336 [details]). <a:ext uri="{C809E66F-F1BF-436E-b5F7-EEA9579F0CBA}"><wp15:webVideoPr xmlns:wp15="http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/word/2012/wordprocessingDrawing" embeddedHtml="<iframe class="youtube-player" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/OXeOs9EOnPw" frameborder="0" type="text/html" width="816" height="480" />" h="480" w="816"/></a:ext> When you hover over the image in Word, it shows the Ctrl+Click tooltip and if ctrl+click, it darkens the document and shows the embedded code in a overlapping window. This behaviour only happens in Word 2013, while with Word 2010 and 2007, ctrl+click simply opens the video link in the user's default browser, like what it normally does with any link. LibreOffice presently doesnt detect the video link around such images in DOCX files (bug 87718).

+1, I see that 11 years after the request, and 6 years after the proposal in the blog, it's still not implemented. Really basic functionality needed for modern slideshows.
