Description Tina Russell 2011-12-02 08:32:53 UTC
When LibreOffice autosaves a document, a progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen, often for only a fraction of a second before finishing and disappearing. A progress bar makes sense in the case of an action prompted directly by the user, and/or an action that stops the program until it finishes, neither of which is true in the case of autosave. Instead, the progress bar is horribly distracting, especially if you have ADD like me; seeing the autosave progress bar flash by at regular intervals can completely throw me off and derail my work process, making it hard to start again.

I’m filing this as a bug rather than an enhancement request since the progress bar’s entire presence for autosave is absurd and should be removed. Until it is removed, it presents both a complete lack of understanding for the creative process and an accessibility concern for people with attention-deficit disorders (though really, I can’t imagine anyone likes regular, flashing progress bars swooping by for no reason). Thanks!

I agree, this should be improved. Can we reduce your request to "Do not show Progress Bar for Autosave action predictable shorter 2 seconds"?

There might be a little problem, as far as I know a document can not be edited during Autosave, and may be other people want to see the progress bar for information. So may be this might be an Accessibility request for an option.

I suppose that would work. If it’s an option, though, it should certainly be on by default (that is, progress bar for autosave should be hidden by default).

I believe that has been inherited from OOo, but I did not check.

Seems to be impossible to predict performance. Asking design team for their opinion

It's not the prediction of progress but the actual time on task. Usually a progress bar shows up when operations take longer than 500ms (2s without feedback is quite a while). Just keep it hidden before.

To make things worse, the progress bar looks very dramatic, and the window loses focus for a moment which makes the title bar flash, which is very disturbing particularly if your setup is dark. Losing focus looks amateurish and makes you think something is seriously wrong with the setup.

Other applications don't get all that excited when they autosave. At the very least, the progress bar should be toned down and the application shouldn't lose focus if possible. Surely, with SSDs autosave should take a split second nowadays.
