Description Harald Koester 2012-03-12 02:47:53 UTC
Problem description:

It is possible to type in a font, that is not installed on your system (= fancy name) without a message. Especially in order to avoid a mistyping of the font name, I would expect a message "The font XYZ is not installed on your system. LibreOffice will use the font ABC instead for displaying and printing. Shall this be done?" or similar.

This message should be displayed at all positions where you can type in the font name directly. In Writer I found these positions:
- Tool bar 'Formatting'
-  Format -> Character... -> tab 'Font'
- Modifying character styles, tab 'Font'
- Modifying paragraph styles, tab 'Font'

Another point in this conjunction: If an uninstalled font is used, a message "This font has not been installed. The closest available font will be used." is displayed in the tab 'Font'. To my opinion this is not really correct. How shall LO know what the closest available font is? Better: "... been installed. LibreOffice will use the font XYZ for displaying and printing.". Similar as in bug 44376 proposed, this message also could be marked in red.

Observed in V. 3.4.5 and 3.5.0.

See also bug 44376, which has a similar intention.

Thanks for new idea
Main reason, why user types font name manually and not selects from drop-down list is this (IMHO): font not installed on currently used computer, but installed on that, on which this file will printed or demonstrated after editing. User perfectly knows that font not installed. Message windows will only annoying, and can not help.

Hello Sasha,

you are right, the use of different computers with different installed fonts should be considered. But I think a message once per editing session of a document could/should be acceptable. The message then could be as follows:

“Font XYZ is not installed on your system.
Nevertheless do you like to use this font in your document?
If “YES”, LibreOffice will use font ABC for displaying and printing of font XYZ. Furthermore during this editing session of this document, font XYZ will be accepted without displaying this message again.”

Behaviour:
1. NO: The cursor is placed back into the input field of the font.
2. YES: The non-installed font name is displayed (in red, as proposed in
bug 44376). The cursor is replaced back into the document.

If one tries to assign a character or paragraph style with an uninstalled font, the message should be slightly different:

“The character (paragraph) style uses the font XYZ. This font is not installed on your system.
Nevertheless do...”

If messages outlined above are implemented, it should be also taken into account to display a message during opening a document, which uses uninstalled fonts. An example: A user prints a document, which has been created with another computer and this document uses fonts, that are not installed on his/her computer. Because of the use of uninstalled fonts, the printing is not satisfying. Without a message it may take a long time to find the reason. With a message the user can get an idea where to look.

Thanks for additional information. It is also important to add option to disable this message or it will annoying for many users.
And I am not sure that information about fonts available for all OS.

To help triage bugs I will combine this with bug 44376 as it is very similar enhancement request already reported.
Do not hesitate to reopen if disagree.
