Description Marek Laane 2012-03-20 10:24:50 UTC
When creating alphabetical index, there may be needed to have some entries in italics (e.g. foreign words). MS Word allows it (and to have bold, too, if needed) in entry dialog, Libreoffice so far doesn't...

This is a feature/enhancement request, therefore changed 'Importance' field to 'enhancement'.

@ Marek Laane

Thanks for new idea

> MS Word allows it (and to have bold, too, if needed)
Please, attach screenshot of this dialog in Word

Please, attach also Word document with such alphabetical index for using as example and for testing

Well, as I have very rare Word user I probably erred in saying there is such direct option. But as explained in http://www.word-2010.com/insert-an-index-in-microsoft-word-2010/ (second image) there still is a possibility to have entry text in bold, italics or essentially in any way font dialog just allows. AFAIK LO doesnät allow it so far. But it would be quite useful if you have in index e.g. foreign words or something else what should have different appearance.

Thanks for link with screenshots. Changing status to New

PS: It would be useful to determine, in which version of Word such functionality appears: 2003, 2007 or 2010.

This is likely a duplicate of bug 30732, as alphabetic indexes are one type of index covered by the indicated report.

I would add to this enhancement request that Index Entries be allow to mix Italic and Roman characters.

I am currently working on a document which needs to have book titles (which should be Italicized) indexed in an entry alphabetized by author. For example -- Warren, Robert Penn: All the King’s Men, 18. In this case, only the title should be in Italics; the author's name and page number should not be.

Currently, the Insert Index Entry dialog appears to accept only plain text. Either the dialog could accept formatted text -- though possibly only recognize only certain traits, such as Italics or Bold, but not different font size -- or alternatively it could accept HTML-type tags, e.g. Warren, Robert Penn: <i>All the King’s Men</i>, 18. The second approach might be easier to code though would likely be less convenient for many users who might populate the Index Entry dialog via copy-and-paste.

Mixed formatting could be accomplished manually, but as been pointed out, this would be lost when the index is updated (i.e., recreated).

I'd like to second this request. Italic text, in particular, is regularly used in book indexes to refer to book titles, periodicals, plays, films etc.

Italics are also essential for indexing non-English terms, which are numerous in some contexts.
Comment 9 R. Green 2022-11-24 11:48:26 UTC
In my experience, adding the ability to ITALICISE a selected part of an index entry is probably the most desirable new feature that could be added. Numerous entries consist of the names of books and journals for which italic text is the publishing standard.
