For writing student lab reports, I make heavy usage of AutoText for "fn" (i.e. type "fn" and press F3). It creates a single row table of two columns, where the equation is on the left and the equation number is on the right. The minor problem is that when I want to insert a cross-reference to the number, I at first couldn't find the name of the field, as most of the names seem to suggest something else. After checking the name of the field used in the equation (right click on number->select "Fields.."), I found out that the field name is "Text", which is not descriptive. I hope in future versions, the field created is named "Equation" instead. There might be problems with compatibility with old documents though.
I propose to use "Formula". What do you think?
(In reply to comment #1) > I propose to use "Formula". What do you think? I think it is good, but if I remember correctly, when citing one talks about "equations" more frequently: "..as can be seen, equation 1 shows..", with formula reserved to calculations done in Writer pressing "F2" or from its button. (Now I realized about a possible new bug. LibreOffice names "Formula" to both: equations as described in this bug (Insert -> object -> formula), and "Formula" written inside the text pressing "F2" (i don't know where is this command in any menus, but anyone is able to add its corresponding button only customizing toolbars).
As Francisco suggested, to avoid clash in usage in other places, perhaps "Formula" should be avoided. Although to be fair, people hardly put cross-references to such formulas. And it seems that the F2 formula doesn't appear in the list of cross-references, so there should be no collision there. But nevertheless, avoiding confusion is better. Another suggestion would be "Math". By the way, as for the compatibility problem, I suggest a kind of heuristics to determine if majority of the cross-references labeled "Text" are indeed equations, and provide an option to convert all of them to "Equation" (or "Formula" or "Math") once determined positive.
However, changing name of sequence numbering will trouble users that insert autotext FN in documents already containing FN autotext: the numbering will be broken between old and new autotexts. A solution would be to have two autotexts: - a new one with the new name (to be defined: Formula or Equation or Math or...) - the same autotext with the old name "Text" for compatibility Then two solutions: 1. autotext FN gives new name of numbering and autotext FNC (Formula Numbering Compatibility) gives name "Text" for numbering 2. autotext FN gives old name "Text" for numbering and autotext FN2 gives new name for numbering
Actually the resolution is more complex than I expected. If "Text" is used to number formulas, it is because it is predefined for frames. Using "Text" allow then to have a name automatically localized when you change UI language. If you change the name of the number sequence, then this name will be the same for all languages. The solution would be to add a new predefined sequence, with Illustration, Table, Text and Drawing. Which is much more complex and out of my skills right now. I have to withdraw from this bug. Set it back to NEW.

I would like to move forward on this bug. Changing the name of numbering will make loose the automatic translation of this name in all l10n as mentioned in comment 5 So we will need a translated name for each l10n. I propose to implement solution 1 of comment 4: - create a new AutoText "FNC" which will insert the old autotext with numbering "Text". - change numbering of autotext "FN" to "Equation" in English and a localized name for other l10n: af: Vergelyking am: ቀመር ar: معادلة as ast be: раўнанне bg: уравнение bn: সমীকরণ bn-IN: সমীকরণ bo br brx bs: jednačina ca: equació ca-valencia: equació cs: rovnice cy: hafaliad da: ligning de: Formel dgo dsb dz el: εξίσωση eo: ekvacio es: Ecuación et: võrrand eu: ekuazio fa: معادله fi: yhtälö fr: Équation fy: fergeliking ga: cothromóid gd: co-aontar gl: ecuación gu: સમીકરણ gug he: משוואה hi: समीकरण hr: jednačina hsb hu: egyenlet id: persamaan is: jafnan it: Equazione ja: 方程式 ka: განტოლება kab kk: теңдеу km: សមីការ kmr-Latn: hevsengiyekê kn: ಸಮೀಕರಣದ ko: 방정식 kok ks lb: Equatioun lo: ສົມຜົນ lt: lygtis lv: vienādojums mai mk: равенка ml: സമവാക്യം mn: тэгшитгэл mni mr: समीकरण my nb: ligningen ne: समीकरण nl: Vergelijking nn: ligningen nr nso: abel oc om or pa-IN: ਸਮੀਕਰਨ pl: równanie pt: Equação pt-BR: Equação ro: ecuație ru: уравнение rw sa-IN sat sd: لاڳاپا وڌائڻ si: සමීකරණය sid sk: rovnice sl: enačba sq: ekuacion sr: једначина sr-Latn ss st sv: ekvation sw-TZ: equation szl ta: சமன்பாடு te: సమీకరణం tg: муодилаи th: สมการ tn tr: denklem ts tt ug uk: рівняння uz: tenglama ve vec vi: phương trình xh: equation zh-CN: 方程 zh-TW: 方程 zu: kwesibalo Help to improve and complete these Google translations.
