As I understand, the bug reporter suggested to implement the feature that is called "Merge across" in MS Office. It merges cells not to the one large cell, but merge all cells in each row inside selection. E.g. 5x5 selection will produce the 5x1 result. Here is the video about merging cells in Excel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YERPlOfd8Kk&t=114s I can not find such function in Calc, so I join the feature request. It is very useful feature.
NEW as feature request explained. I added commenters to CC list, as this is an indication if a request is popular demand.
This would be a very useful feature. But it shouldn't be limited to merging rows. You should be able to determine whether you want to merge rows or columns.
Me too. This would be a very useful feature. I typically use "merge across" far more often than "merge" in Excel, I'm imagine others are probably the same. Here is a macro implementation that I have not tried, https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/76156/calc-merge-across-tool/
Please implement this rather common functionality. I use merge across more often than any other form of cell merging.
Workaround: Merge only first row. Copy. Select rest of the rows. Paste special - only format.

I'm still waiting for an implenentation of this feature because I found myself in a situation where my previous workaround didn't work: Each row had a different formatting. There also isn't any way (not even in Excel afaik) to copy/paste only part of the formatting (like only background color [1], in this case, only cell spanning) [1] https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/clone-color-from-one-cell-to-another/42082
