Description BrendaEM 2012-09-20 22:02:17 UTC
Hi,

Recently, I tried Focuswriter. I found it might benefit Writer if either a minimalist mode was added, adding these option to the full-screen editing mode:

1.) Option to hide the scroll bars until mouse over/hover.

2.) Option to omit "Full Screen" button, see: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54459

3.) Add drag mode/hand, see: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54469

4.) Option to make the background the same as the workspace/border.

5.) Allow the user to use a full-page tiled paper texture for the purpose of reducing eyestrain by giving the user a background to also look at. The current texture and color options do not work for this purpose. I think that this texture should linked and not embedded into the document, because embedded would add to a document's size, and this feature is meant as an UI centric enhancement only. In using ebook readers such as FBReader and Coolreader, I found that adding a texture can reduce eyestrain LCD monitors.

I feel that these options will add value beyond that available in other word processors.

Thanks for new idea
Sorry for can not understand items 4 and 5
Please, add screenshots that demonstrates how it is currently and how it should be

By placing a textured background representing paper, eyestrain may be reduced as the eye has additional geometry to focus on rather than just the edges of the fonts. For this reason, most ebook readers offer such an option.

Optimally, the user could specify a repeating texture for the background of Writer, which is not embedded or saved in the document. The purpose of the background is only to ease reading eyestain.

(Having written 250,000 words in writer, I wish this option existed before.)

Additionally and currently, the horizontal scrollbars appear even when the entire width of the text can be seen, which is suboptimal for zooming.

We have a choice, Librieoffice can play catch-up with commercial applications in a minefield of patents, or it can move ahead.

Thanks for additional explanations
Comment 4 Emir Sarı 2012-12-09 08:41:57 UTC
This is a valid enhancement request, so setting status to "NEW".
Comment 5 BrendaEM 2015-10-18 19:54:34 UTC
Three years have passed. I feel pretty bad.

This looks like a duplicate of bug #33232 (workspaces) - which I think is the proper way to solve this, rather than a one-off solution just for small screens, implement workspaces.

The features specified here, in the various comments, should then be part of a particular workspace. Marking as a dependency rather than duplicate for now - someone with more bug curation experience please modify as needed.
Comment 7 BrendaEM 2016-08-30 17:16:40 UTC
No, it's not all a duplicate, but there is some cross-over.

The Drag functionality would be a great feature--even if it's implemented 4 years later. Mouse wheel scrolling is jumps by line, making it easier to lose ones place.

I find myself wondering why we should try to even post bugs and feature requests.
Comment 8 Zenaan Harkness 2016-08-31 08:38:31 UTC
BrendaM, sorry for the perceived "cold water bucket" - I shall try to be more conscientious in the future.

Hopefully the reference to #33232 is useful.

This is a very useful forum for recording our ideas collectively. There are other ways - personal blog for example, but some are easy to be not maintained and disappear, so this is definitely the right place.
Comment 9 BrendaEM 2016-08-31 19:38:59 UTC
Zenaan,

No, I don't think that you caused me to perceive the wrong thing, I just didn't want a useful feature to be ignored which is very likely to happen if this feature request is marked a duplicate.

Wouldn't it be useful to drag a page while you are reading it?
Adobe thought so. Most of our phones and tablets can do this.

Respectfully, after 4 years and several releases of Libreoffice, please help affirm to me that this forum is a useful venue for submitting ideas by action instead or words.
Comment 10 Zenaan Harkness 2016-09-01 00:33:40 UTC
That requires a developer. I hope to become a developer who would be able to implement this. That will take some substantial time for me personally. Hopefully some other develope will like this feature. I certainly retract my "duplicate of" suggestion (looks like an obvious mistake on my part - this is a genuine feature enhancemnt request - I was cross referencing 20+ bugs at the time, so to me, looks like I clearly mixed this one up; anyway, learning, sorry).

Design team: please review. In the original description there are multiple ideas and normally each should have its own report.

In general, it's better to have one small topic per bug/enhancement ticket.

(In reply to BrendaEM from comment #0)
> 1.) Option to hide the scroll bars until mouse over/hover.
We have the option to hide scrollbars and discussed recently if this needs improvement. See bug 138538

> 2.) Option to omit "Full Screen" button, see:
This has been discussed a couple of times and was always rejected. But there is a workaround, see bug 63986 comment 13.

> 3.) Add drag mode/hand, see:
Okay, would keep this at

> 4.) Option to make the background the same as the workspace/border.
You can do per tools > options > application color > application background

> 5.) Allow the user to use a full-page tiled paper texture...
This could become part of the proposed LibreOffice theme. The theming would not only affect the toolbar but also the document background. See bug 125217.

My take: Resolve this complex ticket as WFM. Most is working out of the box, some pieces have been filed in other tickets. If you want the full screen mode to be different from the normal mode and expect the setting being applied automatically I'd advice to put it in a macro. Feel free to reopen/comment if you disagree.
