Description rossnixon 2012-09-21 08:30:00 UTC
I received an XLS (97/2003) s/s that had about 300 rows of data, some header cells that were merged across and down several cells, some hidden rows at the top.
There were no macros, no formulas, just simple formatting and a few comments on a few cells.

After adding extra columns, doing some manipulation like 'text to column', deleting some columns, simplifying headers etc, all looked good. I was saving as I went, in the same .XLS (97/2003) format. Closed and reopened the s/s. About 90% of the rows were now invisible. I assumed they were lost, as selecting a now empty cell did not reveal content in the data entry line.

Assuming some non-LibreOffice error, I repeated the above the next day, with some minor variations. The same major loss occurred.

I then opened the corrupt file with MS Office 2010 Starter. It advised there was corruption. I forced this to continue and successfully recovered all the raw data.

Hi. Would it be possible for you to provide a sample document to help reproduce the problem?
Comment 2 rossnixon 2012-09-21 08:55:37 UTC
Can't supply the original spreadsheet until I get back to work in about 60 hours from now. I have since seen another bug report that looks the same except saving as .XLSX. That person also assumed their data was gone. Thank God for my Microsoft fix - that is certainly a change, previously it was OpenOffice recovering corrupt Microsoft files.

Basic XLS file

This spreadsheet loses data after the previously mentioned edits. This is not discovered until *after* the file is reopened.

Just saved the original file using 3.6.3.1

It is slightly different than the original file but no data are lost.
I see the same results also with LO-3.4

Hmm, I am unable to reproduce this problem easily. I tried to just safe the file. I tried to add a column and safe the file. In both cases, all data survived.

Could you please provide some simple scenario (few easy steps) how to get the corrupted file?

Remove from the MAB3.6 list because this bug is already 5 months unanswered and still in NEEDINFO. I can not reproduce this behavior using Linux Mint 14 x64 with LibreOffice 4.0.2.1.

Kind regards,
Joren
