Description markus.mail 2012-09-27 11:12:06 UTC
Problem description:

Printing documents with pictures results in huge print jobs or files. The printing option "reduce bitmap" seems to be ignored with recent versions of LibreOffice (and Apache OpenOffice as well).

The last version I could find to work is OO 3.2.1 from Debian Squeeze.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open MyCat.odt
2. Print to a file.
3. Set "reduce bitmap" option in settings.
4. Print again to a file and compare file sizes.

Platform (if different from the browser):
Debian Squeeze x86 and amd64

Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20120909 Firefox/15.0.1 SeaMonkey/2.12.1

The attached print files were printed via cups and a HP Business InkJet 2800 printer.

Here is a zip file with a demo file and its print results:

I can confirm it. I use LO on WinXP. There should not be a need for restart, but changing it in Tools > Options should work immediately. The feature had worked in OOo3.2.1 with the old print dialog. It is broken in OOo 3.3.0 with the new print dialog. [BTW Reduce gradients is broken too.]
When you test it without wasting paper and use printing to file, remember, that you have to set it for 'printing to file' separately, see radio button on top of that dialog page.

Tried with LO 4.3.5.2 on a Debian 8 amd64 system.

Problem still exists. Print to file gives the same filesize, regardless "Reduce bitmaps" settings.

I guess, per my own test, that this is still valid.
But please attach sample file here (MyCat.zip or similar).

Just tried LibreOffice 7.2.1 on Win64. Nothing has changed.
Printing with option "reduce bitmap" is still ignored.
I can hardly see someone has ever worked on this issue.

Dear markus.mail,

To make sure we're focusing on the bugs that affect our users today, LibreOffice QA is asking bug reporters and confirmers to retest open, confirmed bugs which have not been touched for over a year.

There have been thousands of bug fixes and commits since anyone checked on this bug report. During that time, it's possible that the bug has been fixed, or the details of the problem have changed. We'd really appreciate your help in getting confirmation that the bug is still present.

If you have time, please do the following:

Test to see if the bug is still present with the latest version of LibreOffice from https://www.libreoffice.org/download/

If the bug is present, please leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice.

If the bug is NOT present, please set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED-WORKSFORME and leave a comment that includes the information from Help - About LibreOffice.

Please DO NOT

Update the version field
Reply via email (please reply directly on the bug tracker)
Set the bug's Status field to RESOLVED - FIXED (this status has a particular meaning that is not
appropriate in this case)

If you want to do more to help you can test to see if your issue is a REGRESSION. To do so:
1. Download and install oldest version of LibreOffice (usually 3.3 unless your bug pertains to a feature added after 3.3) from https://downloadarchive.documentfoundation.org/libreoffice/old/

2. Test your bug
3. Leave a comment with your results.
4a. If the bug was present with 3.3 - set version to 'inherited from OOo';
4b. If the bug was not present in 3.3 - add 'regression' to keyword

Feel free to come ask questions or to say hello in our QA chat: https://web.libera.chat/?settings=#libreoffice-qa
