The table in the word count dialogue has three columns: * description * Selection * Document The Selection column should be turned off if the user has not selected anything. (We should probably still reserve the space for the third column in the window, because the window is non-modal.)
My only concern with this is that if you turn it off, users might not actually know that it's possible to select something and see a word count.
Marked as: New (confirmed) Enhancement (works as intended right now, this is possibly an enhancement) Low (doesn't add functionality, more about the look of LibO)

Absolutely correct. Luckily, we can steal a solution for this from the Gedit text editor: just make the Selection column grey when nothing is selected. This way, it draws fewer attention, is more out of the way, but it still there.
=> Adapt title to fit my comment 3 (Btw: the simple rationale for this bug is, that we should highlight what's likely most important to the user in the given situation, and try to make it as quick as possible to read the word count.)
thanks for the update, that makes sense and I think medium priority now is fit as there is no loss of data and you pointed out how it's functional for users :)
Isn't implemented in LibreOffice 5.2.1.
