Could you tell what's your Java version?
Do you have any warning/error message on console?
Could you retrieve a backtrace (see https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport#How_to_get_a_backtrace_.28on_Linux.29)

No feedback since months, I put it as WFM.

Lucian: if you reproduce this with a newer LO version, don't hesitate to reopen this tracker and please, provide information asked in my previous comment.

Probably a duplicate of bug 33266 :  Writer crashes when bibliography database selected, when Base isn't installed
Indeed (K)Ubuntu does not install the Base module by default.
