Inspired by Markus' comment on bug 60107 (on smilies as icon sets), here some more possible icon sets for the conditional formatting feature:

Comment 1 Stefan Knorr (astron) 2013-01-31 19:27:37 UTC
Hi Gerry,

thanks for the many good proposals... I'll go through them one after another.

Traffic lights 1, 2: We already have traffic lights, also the images we currently use are quite small (16*16), so adding an option that shows all three lights at once doesn't seem like a great idea. If at all, I'd go for something akin to Traffic lights 1 – very simple and reduced.

Thumbs up, thumbs down: In general, this is a nice idea – we'd probably need a sideways thumbs symbol, too (the smallest number of icon in a set is 3). However, the current execution does not fit into the Tango style, so we'd have to redo those.
(I'd stick with keeping the hands red/green though, as using any sort of natural colouring might bring up PC issues.)

Weather: good idea, but might be hard to recognise at smaller sizes (especially rain), I guess. Good thing is, though, there already are weather icons both from the original Tango theme [1] and from the Gnome Tango theme [2].

Thermometer: another good idea, but will have to be created anew, since your proposal doesn't follow Tango style (and is also quite large). Not sure how recognisable the thermometer will be at small sizes...

Tick and cross (option 1): We already have these, but they seem to be unavailable from the UI. Markus, are there problems with them or is this an oversight (should be either "3 Symbols 1" or "3 Symbols 2")?

Tick and cross (option 2): We already have something similar. Are you unhappy with the current design?

Five star rating: will run into space problems (i.e. almost impossible to do on 16*16).

Sheep: I don't think these will work well everywhere on the world, so probably rather not.

Follow-up for Markus: I noticed stars, squares and triangles are currently missing in the UI – should I report a bug about that or are they not yet supported?
Comment 3 Gerry 2013-01-31 20:33:02 UTC
Thanks Astron for having a look at the ideas.

You ask "Are you unhappy with the current design?". In order to be able to answer your question, I had a second look at all available icon sets in LO4. I think all but one icon set look nice and professional: The set "3 Symbols 1" could be improved. I doesn't look professional, because the symbols overlap to the edges of the circles (particularly the exclamation mark) and there seems to be no colour gradient. In comparison, the similar icons in Excel 2010 look more professional.

I agree to all your comments:

I see that the height of traffic lights would be way too much. The already existing traffic lights in LO4 are nice and perfect.

I also like thumbs, weather, thermometer and - if feasible - also the star ranking system.

By the way, the thermometer is also available as single graphics:
http://openclipart.org/detail/170672/weather-icon---hot-by-gnokii-170672
http://openclipart.org/detail/170665/weather-icon---cold-by-gnokii-170665
http://openclipart.org/detail/170682/weather-icon---warm-by-gnokii-170682

P.S: Isn't it possible to use SVG vector graphics for the icon sets, since LO4 supports them nicely?

Ahhh! *Head against table*. They are part of a Microsoft extension to OOXML so I did not implement them initially but we are shipping the icons. I'll add them for 4.1 to the supported icon-sets but it might take a bit to get the OOXML import/export for them right. I still have problems to understand how they decide when to write which element and which information into the extLst entry and when to write it not.

Markus, about your last comment, I noticed those icons are still missing in 4.1.0.4

Should I/anyone open a bug for those?

It's a shame, the stars are particularly useful...

Is there an enhancement bug report about Microsoft formats compatibility that you know of? I am currently using an xlsx spreadsheet with star ratings, but LO does not figure it out.

I know this is about the bug described here, but as I saw this conversation, I thought I could ask here.

Cheers

4 icons for lomer evaluation
Comment 7 Thierry Munoz 2013-09-07 16:34:23 UTC
Inspired by the icons set made by Astron, I added 4 new icons (based on the Astron's work) based on the LOMER evaluation (see the attachment) : it's useful at school in order to evaluate the pupils.

4 skill levels : 2 red points (the lowest), 1 red point, 1 green point, 2 green points (the highest).

Here more info in french or in spanish (sorry I didn't find in english) :
http://michel.vauquois.free.fr/indexPL.html

An other link to see the better visibility :
https://sacoche.sesamath.net/appel_doc.php?fichier=faq_documentation__codes_Lomer
With only 2 colors (green and red), the visibility is better than with 4.

There is a letter in the points in order to print in black and white : R for red or rouge in french ; V for vert (green in english).

Perhaps, it is a little too small (16x16) but it's a begining before the size can be modified ;-).

Regarding the last part of the conversation, I opened the following bug: Bug 69095
Comment 11 Gerry 2013-09-08 17:56:45 UTC
Nice to see that there is again discussion on additional icon sets. I added bug 60107 to the "see also" list. I would love to see three smilies as icon set options.
