Problem description: When opening "insert image from file" dialog that dialog has option "link" to not embed image content to document directly. Every time that option is unchecked when that dialog is opened. Will be good if that option state will be remembered till next open of dialog. I'm using linked image files a lot and every time I must check that option, and is painful to debug big document when I forgot to check "linked" on one of images. Current behavior: Option "link image file" is always clear on dialog open. Expected behavior: Would be good if option state will be remembered. Operating System: Ubuntu Version: 3.6.4.3 release
Hi. I did look at this Insert -> Picture -> From File feature in 4.0.0.3. I see that the lower left hand corner has the option to check "Link". I can see how, if you're needing to insert a lot of images this way over a short span of time, it would help if it defaulted to those settings. Or perhaps there could be an option to "Remember these settings". I will set the status of this to NEW, and prioritize as an Enhancement. Thank you for the feedback! I was guided here from this Q&A over at Ask Libreoffice: http://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/15363/how-do-i-link-inserted-images-by-default-in-writer/ . I concur with Valdas. An option like this would be very helpful. Thank you, Brenda, for reviewing and triaging this bug! I think it might be a good idea to also implement a global setting that controls all insertion methods (drag and drop, copy-paste, insert from file dialog, and gallery). For now instead of using the "insert image from file" dialog you might find it faster to directly drag and drop the images into the document while holding down CTRL+SHIFT. This automatically "link"s the images (Thanks, @manj_k!).

I also arrived here via the link in the Ask LibreOffice article. I would also like to see this enhancement. I'm designing a specification template for use by many different individuals. We want them to link rather than embed the figures in their specifications. Even though we say this in our instructions, it's easy to forget when you're in the middle of editing a large document. Having a way to set the default in our document template would be a great help. Thanks!
This bug would save me time and disk space. It's great how LibreOffice lets you link to images rather than embed them in the ODT. It allows me to take ODTs that are many MBs and make them ~100 KB. It is a pain to have to remember to do this for every images. In fact, I'd prefer a version of LibreOffice that wouldn't let me embed images and would always link. Many people might not, but I would prefer that model. It would also be great to have a script I could run that would move all the images out. We'll take it a step at a time.
I would like to see this request solved. Most time I use Insert as Link for adding images into libreoffice writer. Allways I must set the hook on Inaert as Link. This should be able to set as default. Many thanks Rainer
It's not a big problem, but I think the improvement is very clear--you rarely alternate between linking and embedding figures. Remembering the last choice is a good solution. Thank you in advance! P.S. There could also be an option to both link and embed (like e.g. in MS Word). If you don't "manually" update, the embedded figure stays, and you can also send self-contained .odt files to your colleagues. And also an option to convert from link to embedded (Ctrl-6 in Word). P.S. I'm new to LO Writer (guess where I come from) and I'm loving it. Thank you again.

Changing priority back to 'medium' since the number of duplicates is lower than 5
+1. This is a real pain when you have a whole load of linked (rather than embedded) images to add. It is all too easy to forget that the checkbox has reverted to unticked, which means that you have to recheck the status of all your images.

I would like to add some information. In LO 7.4.3.2 Windows 10 build the "link" checkbox is not only not remembering last use scenario when inserting new link, but is also __always__ unchecked even if You do: 1.Insert image, linked. 2.Select image properties 3.Make an attempt to change a linked file. thous it not only does not remember last state, but does not follow the state of "linked" status for a file You do change. Or 1.Insert image, linked. 2.Select Edit->External links->Modify In second case it is unchecked and grayed-out while it should be "checked" grayed out. As far as I can remember (allow some doubts for my bad memory) LO running previous versions on Windows XP had this checkbox in a correct state.
This enhancement is not specific to Writer, it is equally applicable to Impress which potentially uses images all the time. I've changed component to UI. Apologies if this is a wrong move. To strengthen this feature proposal with a use-case: I have lots of charts generated by external software, and I need to present them in Impress. When preparing presentation, I often need to update/re-generate the images 10 slides down the road (e.g. fix typo in axis descriptions). When images are linked I just re-run the generator and I'm done. On the contrary, updating dozes on embedded images is very manual and error prone.
Patch: https://gerrit.libreoffice.org/c/core/+/158254 Unfortunately, it hangs one of the UI tests and so it cannot be merged. I could not figure out the problem because on my linux machine the problem does not occur using a clang build.
