Begin with an autosumed negative number. Format the cell to show negative numbers in red. The negative number will not show in red unless the autosum formula is changed and then changed back again.

Can you give your LO version? (last ones are 3.6.6 and 4.0.2)
Could you attach the file so we can try to reproduce?

negative numbers change to red on saving but are black next time spreadsheet file opened
