current behavior, after performing the steps to reproduce the bug

Problem description: If you select a comment text around it, the commented text becomes highlighted in gray.

Steps to reproduce:
1. With no LibreOffice processes open, open LibreOffice Writer.
2. Type "asdf" (without quotation marks)
3. Holding the Shift key, press the left arrow key four times.
4. With the mouse, menu Insert > Comment
5. (in the comment), type "qwer"
6. Click to the right of the "asdf" in the document (not the comments column)
7. Press the right arrow key twice, so that the cursor goes after the comment (in the document)
8. Type "tyui"
9. Holding the Shift key, press the left arrow key six times.
10. Press the Backspace key

Current behavior: "asdf" looks highlighted in gray. The word count in the status bar says that there is more than one word. The status bar has the word "read-only". The Formatting toolbar is faded/grayed out except for Styles and Formatting, Font Color, Highlighting, and Background Color.

Expected behavior: "asdf" remains and is editable

To get the Formatting toolbar to fade/gray and the status bar to say read-only, after performing the steps to reproduce the bug in the first comment:
1. press Ctrl + N
2. type "asdf"
3. press the Close button
4. press the button in the dialog box that causes the document to close (I forgot which button that is)
Comment 2 flamingdescent 2013-06-09 15:47:53 UTC
The button is "Close without saving"
Comment 3 ign_christian 2013-06-10 02:13:53 UTC
Confirm reproducible on LO 4.0.4.1 (Win7 32bit).

But I don't understand comment 1
Comment 4 flamingdescent 2013-06-10 02:30:23 UTC
Sorry for not being clear in comment 1. Here are comments 1 and 2 restated in a clearer way:

In the Description, I wrote that "The status bar has the word "read-only". The Formatting toolbar is faded/grayed out except for Styles and Formatting, Font Color, Highlighting, and Background Color."
That is not true unless you perform the following steps, after performing the "Steps to reproduce" in the Description:
1. press Ctrl + N
2. type "asdf"
3. click the Close button (in the upper-right corner in the Windows operating system)
4. click "Close without saving" in the dialog box

Oh I've just realized I did something different.

> In the Description, I wrote that "The status bar has the word "read-only".
> The Formatting toolbar is faded/grayed out except for Styles and Formatting,
> Font Color, Highlighting, and Background Color."

I experienced above behavior by clicking somewhere after doing steps in the Description. So..no need to do additional steps on comment 4.

I just wanted to throw a comment in here and say that I'm still encountering this bug in the release version 4.2.3.3 on Windows 7. Deleting the comment from within the text by either backspacing over the marker for the comment or pressing delete in front of the marker for the comment causes what was highlighted to become read-only.

Also, if you delete the entirety of what was highlighted and then undo the action, the text and the comment return, but the text is set to read-only. No amount of undoing will fix this.
Comment 7 Matt Kelley 2014-05-05 23:17:55 UTC
Sorry, I meant to say that no amount of undoing will fix the problem unless you can get back a state from before you entered the comment.
Comment 8 Matt Kelley 2014-05-05 23:22:28 UTC
And I found another careless part in my comment. I meant that pressing backspace or delete once the comment has been selected causes the issue, as in the first comment. I'm sorry I didn't read over my initial comment better and had to post 2 subsequent comments afterward!
