I'm running Arch Linux.

$ uname -a
Linux box 3.9.2-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat May 11 20:31:08 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ soffice --version
LibreOffice 4.0.4.2


Running soffice briefly shows the loading screen, then exits with error code 139. There is no difference providing --calc, no argument, or a file.

Could you try to rename your LO directory profile (see https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile) and give it a new try?

Also, last trace of your strace file shows DejaVu font, what's the version of fonts-dejavu-core on your system?
On pc Debian x86-64 testing updated today, it's 2.33+svn2514-3

This no longer happens to me. Some update in the 6 months must've fixed it. Thanks for your hard work!
