wish it would be possible to use images/pictures as mail merge fields
or links to files to be inserted in place varying from record to record

Seems like a valid enhancement request but might be quite hard to implement.

Low - mail merges are rare to begin with (most users just stick to basic functionality)

Note: Just because it's been confirmed as a valid enhancement request is not a guarantee that it will be implemented. A developer will have to volunteer to implement this and because the developers are volunteers, QA does not "push" bugs onto them.
