I can confirm the problem for
Version: 4.2.0.0.alpha0+
Build ID: 8e55a68b7cc31e5cc07013f7a904db3434a7849e
TinderBox: Win-x86@39, Branch:master, Time: 2013-09-01_00:02:20
I work on Windows 7.

Workaround:
Insert an additional rectangle on the text area and set its background to the desired gradient. Save and reload. Delete the rectangle. Now the frame retains the gradient background too.

It seems that initially the palette is not loaded correctly.

I can confirm the problem for LibreOffice 4.2.1.1 (Portable):

Inserting a frame in writer document and choose a color gradient as background of frame. Then save and close writer document. When reopen the document, the color gradient of the frame is switched to "black and white"-gradient.

OS: Windows 7 Professional, 32bit

Save and reload is OK now, but the you need to insert and leave the frame in one step and the in another step re-edit it and set the background. During initial insert all Area-lists are empty. So the mentioned "It seems that initially the palette is not loaded correctly." is still present.

I use Version: 5.0.0.0.alpha1

The lists are filled now, but you still need two steps. You cannot set the area filling immediately when creating the frame. Tested with Version: 5.3.0.0.alpha0+
Build ID: ba269f7294e2416659011cbb498a2c6b5f9d5199
CPU Threads: 4; OS Version: Windows 6.1; UI Render: default;

Locale: de-DE (de_DE); Calc: group

If you change the frame style to have a gradient, the newly created frame will get that filling.

I set it to low priority, because there exists two easy workarounds.
