Description cawestman 2013-11-11 12:44:44 UTC
Problem description:

I received from a colleague a password-protected Excel (xlsx) file and it will not open. I cannot even get to the dialog box which would request a password. Instead, I get a popup message saying "Version Incompatibility. Incorrect File Version."

Steps to reproduce:
1. Double-click password-protected xlsx file to open.
2. Receive error message.

Current behavior:
File will not open; error message "Version Incompatibility. Incorrect File Version." received.

Expected behavior:

A dialog box should appear with an text entry field and message saying "Enter password"

Due to confidentiality, I am unable to attach the files affected (some of my old files - such as from May of 2013 - will not open now either; perhaps this previously worked in Libreoffice 3.x?).
Operating System: Windows 7
Version: 4.1.2.3 release

LO 4.1 supports only decryption of files created with MS Office 2007. The encryption was changed in MS Office 2010 and then again in MS Office 2013 and LO 4.1 does not support decryption of these 2 formats. LO 4.2 however will support all encryption formats so either wait for LO 4.2 to be released or try the alpha / daily build (recommended only for testing - not for daily use).

There is a possibility in MS Office 2010/2013 to force it to use the legacy 2007 encryption format with a change in the registry but every colleague would need to do this.

the excel file may be in the newest version and it cannot be opened in your computer because you install the old version so ...
The solution is that you have to upgrade your Microsoft excel to the newest version or the same one with the file you have received
