Description Rob Parker 2014-02-08 21:27:27 UTC
Problem description:
Trying to open any template for editing by selecting it in the Template Manager, then clicking the Edit button causes LibreOffice to crash (or hang).

I initially found this issue when running LibreOffice 4.2.0.4 on Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) with the ppa:libreoffice/ppa PPA being used to provide newer versions of LO. I later found the same issue with the version of LO in the current daily build image of the upcoming 14.04 (trusty) release of Ubuntu.

I've since also installed LibreOffice 4.2.0.4 on a Windows XP virtual machine, and found the same problem there. The only difference on Windows XP (versus the two Ubuntu releases) was that the Recovery Manager opens immediately after the crash - but otherwise it's the same issue.e

So to reiterate, I've found this problem when testing on:
 - Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) amd64, where LibreOffice 4.2.0.4 is provided via the ppa:libreoffice/ppa PPA/repository
 - Ubuntu 14.04 (trusty) amd64 daily build (dated 08-Feb-2014 07:49), where LibreOffice 4.2.0.4 is provided as part of the image
 - Windows XP SP3 32-bit (in a VirtualBox VM), where LibreOffice 4.2.0.4 is downloaded from https://www.libreoffice.org/download

Workarounds I've found to open a template for editing include
 - Calling LibreOffice on the command-line with the '-o' option preceding the template file path
 - Where a template has recently been created and saved for the first time, it will appear in recent documents from where it can still be opened

When I first found this issue, I've filed a bug downstream with Ubuntu, which can be found at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libreoffice/+bug/1277128

Steps to reproduce (using the included Impress templates as an example):
1. Open any LibreOffice application (e.g. Writer, Impress, etc.)
2. Open the Template Manager via
     File --> Templates --> Manage
3. In the Template Manager window, click the Presentations tab
4. Double-click on the 'Presentation Backgrounds' folder which should already be there
5. Singe-click any of the templates shown then click the Edit button above
7. Notice that all LibreOffice windows disappear.
I've also had the same issue with my own Writer template (.ott).

Current behaviour:
Trying to open any template for editing by selecting it in the Template Manager, then clicking the Edit button causes LibreOffice to crash (or hang).

Expected behaviour:
After selecting a template in the Template Manager and clicking the Edit button, the selected template should be opened for editing.
Operating System: All
Version: 4.2.0.4 release
