There is a "Slide X from Y" textual indication, but a visual progress bar would be better.

(While I'm thinking of it, that should read "slide X *of* Y" in English)

I do not agree about argument “progress bar is better than numbers”. Slide number is more useful for presenter—some people just remember which slide contains required information. In such cases progress bar doesn’t help at all. The idea about progress bar is great when progress itself is not really important, like applications launcher or downloading a file. When we are talking about presentations numbers are really important. Even if you don’t agree with me—take a look at Keynote for iOS or Office Remote of WP. These guys really do research and not think hypothetically (like me).

*Do* they really do research? How do you know? How do you know what they concluded?

I'm glad that you want to incorporate real data into the design process, but unfortunately, as far as I can tell, you don't have any, you just think you do. I'm not sure copying other products is necessarily the right approach - but it is certainly *an* approach.

Are the resources required to take the other road (ie running a small study) available? If not, we can choose to either copy other products, or make this change without studying the question beforehand (which might allow us to gather some data in the future, even if only anecdotally).

You are right, I have no idea what do they do, this is just an example. There wasn’t any ideas to copy anything. I‘m talking about real people I know who produce presentations with < 30 slides and rely on indices. Personally I think that current solution is fine. If you have real arguments that progress is really better than numbers and the current approach should be changed immediately—it would be great to hear that instead of blaming me that I don’t know anything at all.

I'm sorry. You said we should use some real data, but we don't have any. I don't mean to blame you, because that's certainly not your fault.

I can try to make an argument without data though.

When using this app, it isn't my focus. Rather, I'm trying to ensure I'm facing the audience, speaking clearly, and so on. It's therefore important that the information I need be readily available without having to look closely for it, or move the mobile device close to my face (in fact, the device might be further away than arm-length in some cases). That might be difficult in a stressful situation with bright lights shining in my face, and/or in a dark room. Under those conditions, text is disfavoured. Much of the data should be presented visually, but in a non-text format. This might be in addition to text. 

In this case, there's no reason a progress indication can't include both a visual indicator progressing from left to right along with text to indicate the current slide number and the ending slide number. But including the non-text indication can make it easier to see at a distance, and at a glance, even under unfavourable visual conditions.

Moving bug to (new) 'Impress Remote' product.

I would also benefit from this feature. I was already thinking about it more that three years ago.
It's not important whether progress bar is better than slide numbers or not.
Both features would be useful.
