Description Kevin Hunter 2014-03-08 01:34:27 UTC
Problem description:

Having opened the Help window from the Tools->Options window, then typing an item in the search bar, then closing the help window, crashes LibreOffice.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install LibreOffice 4.2, updated as per the Ubuntu PPA.
2. Open Writer. An empty document will do.
3. Open the Tools->Options dialog window
4. Click the Help button to open the locally installed Help.
5. Type in a Help search item -> press enter to update the help pane.
6. Attempt to close the window.
7. Don't profit as LibO is now crashed. Hope you saved your work!

Current behavior:

LibreOffice crashes when I attempt to close the Help window.

Expected behavior:

LibreOffice should not crash. Ever.

Operating System: Ubuntu
Version: 4.2.2.1 rc

I'm apparently unable to upload the rest of my 6 images visually showing how to recreate the crash in question. For any interested party, the problem I'm having is that when I attempt to attach the image, I get this message:

... you have no valid token for the create_attachment action while processing the 'attachment.cgi' script ...

Following the instructions to reattach the image leads to the same problem. I wonder if logging out and back in will let me attach more images.

Apparently logging out and then back in enabled me to upload the rest. Hmm. Hopefully this crash is recreatable by others.

For the record, I'm on 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04, having installed LibreOffice from ppa:libreoffice/ppa.

Out of curiosity, reaching help via the Tools -> Options panel is a bit out of the way. Any improvement if you open panel directly from the Help -> Help menu?

Yes. I happened upon this error twice in a row, and realized that I couldn't recreate with the path you suggest (Help->Help). That is why I gave the exact mechanism for recreating the crash. There is perhaps a more direct route, but this one works (as it were). I wonder if there is an interaction with the fact that I'm not using Unity, but Openbox? Hmm.

Given the lack of anyone else finding the error, I suspect this may be due to an interaction differential between libraries available on 12.04 and what other's have tested. I'd be much obliged if someone with a 64-bit 12.04 install were to test this. I've also just installed the -dbg package from the ppa, so maybe that can help track down the suspected null pointer dereference.

Meanwhile, if no one else can recreate this crash, this bug will go out of date once Trusty debuts, or possibly when 12.04 is EOL ...

Confirming this for 4.2.3.1, Ubuntu 13.10 64bit, Unity, installed from deb packages downloaded from the LO website.

The crash happens for me also in 4.1 series (currently 4.1.3.2 from Ubuntu repository).
