Description Björn Michaelsen 2014-05-13 13:25:59 UTC
On Windows, deeper menu structures are common in the start menu. Thus I suggest to add a subfolder "LibreOffice Community" with links to helpful resources.

e.g.:
start menu
- LibreOffice folder
-- LibreOffice
-- LibreOffice Writer
-- LibreOffice Calc
-- ...
-- LibreOffice Community
--- User-to-User Support (link to ask.libreoffice.org)
--- LibreOffice wiki (link to the TDF wiki)
--- LibreOffice Users chat (link to user freenode webchat)
--- News from the Community (link to planet.documentfoundation.org)

Bugzilla/BSA should not be there -- someone who knows nothing about these things will not be very happy about the response there (e.g. because of incomplete report for inexperience etc.). Better he/she learns about bugzilla on ask.libreoffice.orhg

If the ux-advise team is ok with this, it likely can be turned into an Easy Hack.

@Björn,

Setting to Enhancement and as NEW.

But, I am not sure this makes a lot of sense. Especially with the elimination of the Start Menu with Windows 8 onward (still there but deeply suppressed).

If this were to go anywhere, I would think that onto the general use Help menu and available to all OS implementations.

+1 for VSF suggestions (general Help menu + all OS)
Comment 3 Björn Michaelsen 2014-05-15 13:03:05 UTC
wrt all OS: e.g. on Linux there is no deep menu structure: there is a (distro/desktop-defined) top level "category", were LibreOffice falls in "Office" or "Productivity" and there are no further subfolders below.

See http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/

Like Stuart, I am not sure this request is very useful.

+ Afaik, Microsoft generally does not like the developer habit of using the
start menu to link to web pages, uninstallers etc.

+ Windows 8 now has a Start screen that only supports one level of
  categories.

+ On Linux, Björn's comment 3 applies.

+ On OS X, there is no such thing as a menu, just a dock & an application
  folder.

Seems like a better idea to me to update http://qa.libreoffice.org/feedback
with links to the wiki and chat.
The libreoffice.org already contains plenty of news, so no need to link to that, imho.

So hiding this below "Help" doesnt benefit us much, but in the fancy new start center we have:

|Help | Extensions |

in the lower left corner. How about making that:

| Get Involved |
| Feedback |
| Help | Extensions |

with "Get Involved" linking to http://www.libreoffice.org/community/get-involved/ and feedback linking to http://qa.libreoffice.org/feedback. Putting "Get Involved" on the top would be quite essential to raise awareness of this being a community effort and helping users to get out of a pure consumer mindset ...

So is 2015 finally the year of LibO?

Kidding. I like the idea.

Agree with Bjorn this should be included in Windows in the start menu as i've seem many applications do the same thing and Windows XP and Windows 7 have a larger user base than Windows 8 and Windows 10 brings back the start menu as it was before.

Including it in the help is also a good idea as there is more than enough space as it only has 5 entries.

Please add keyword 'needsUXEval' and CC 'libreoffice-ux-advise@lists.freedesktop.org' if input from UX is needed.
