One simple draw object. Edit object, select Format->Layer

Selecting Format->Layer while editing the simple Draw object in the attached doc causes Writer to crash.

Crazy as this sounds - I just confirmed this from the earliest release of LibreOffice (meaning we inherited the bug from AOO).

I have been able to confirm the issue on:
Version 3.3.0.4
Platform: Ubuntu x64

As I've been able to confirm this problem on an earlier release I am changing the version number as version is the earliest version that we can confirm the bug, we use comments to say that the bug exists in newer versions as well.

Marking as:

New (confirmed)
Major - total crash, major is appropriate
Highest - tossing this on to the MAB list, I know it's been around for years but simple steps resulting in a total crash seems like it belongs there.

LibreOffice is powered by a team of volunteers, every bug is confirmed (triaged) by human beings who mostly give their time for free. We invite you to join our triaging by checking out this link:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/BugTriage

There are also other ways to get involved including with marketing, UX, documentation, and of course developing - http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/.

Lastly, good bug reports help tremendously in making the process go smoother, please always provide reproducible steps (even if it seems easy) and attach any and all relevant material

Should add I found a work-around. The Draw object in file I attached is copied from older Writer document. Creating a new Draw object within Writer will not cause crash when calling Format->Layer.

Work-around is:
1. Edit problematic Draw object
2. Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C (copy all draw items)
3. Close Draw object
4. Insert->Object->OLE Object->Create New->Libre 4.2 Drawing
5. Ctrl-V (paste draw items)
6. Esc (close Draw object)

Test:
1. Double-click new Draw object to edit
2. Select Format->Layer, which will now work

Conclusion: Something inside the Draw object itself, or how or with which product it was created, is causing the crash. The Draw items can be reused in new Draw object without crashing.

I thought that might be the case - else I would have expected more reports. None the less - whatever is triggering it might come up again so best to have it resolved. Going to go ahead and leave it on the MAB list. Thanks for the update

Agreed. It shouldn't happen under any condition. Older documents would always be problematic.

bt with symbols on 4.2

On pc Debian x86-64 with master sources updated today, I don't reproduce this.
However, with 4.2 updated some days ago, I can reproduce this.

I guess the reason there were so few error reports is that this bug is shadowed by bug 54155 (Clicking on Drawing after editing a Group inside a Group causes Crash), making editing of drawings inside Impress practically useless. As this bug exists for years, experienced users won't even try to edit a drawing in Impress.

On pc Debian x86-64 with 4.2.4 LO Debian package, I can reproduce this.
However, I don't reproduce this with 4.2 sources updated yesterday.

Any better with 4.2.5?

Tested with LO 4.2.6 and 4.3.2. Cannot reproduce anymore. So I set as resolved.
