The Area dialog has 3 tabs in it (Fill, Shadow, Transparency) but the sidebar only has settings for 2 (Fill, Transparency). So it would be useful to add the shadow features, the least of which would be angle (drop down list), color and transparency.
Hi Jay, Looks as a no-brainer initially.. however: (In reply to Jay Philips from comment #0) > The Area dialog has 3 tabs in it (Fill, Shadow, Transparency) It has 7 for a selected Shape in Writer. That dialog does not exist for a selected Image in Writer.. Where did you see it :) ? Do we run the risk that the current options in the Side Bar cater for all - though limited, but that adding more is complicated for all situations? Thanks, Cor
Hey Cor, (In reply to Cor Nouws from comment #1) > It has 7 for a selected Shape in Writer. > That dialog does not exist for a selected Image in Writer.. 4 to 7 are means of modifying the options for selection in the Area/Fill tab. e.g. In the colors tab, you can create/modify a color, but you still have to go to the Area/Fill tab to set the area as that color. Those tabs are there because of the lack of customization of those options from the Area/Fill tab. > Do we run the risk that the current options in the Side Bar cater for all - > though limited, but that adding more is complicated for all situations? We would ideally want the basic features to be visible (i did this by leaving out the shadow distance field) and if a user wants more, he/she opens the dialog. Its always a hard thing to determine what are the basic features that should be displayed.
Thanks Jay. Convincing explanation.
Created attachment 114135 [details] how the shadow properties look in iwork and calligra sidebars
Created attachment 114141 [details] shadow section mockup
Forgot to mention that the angle drop down list has angles in 45 degree intervals and the distance drop down has values from 0pt to 50pt in intervals of 5s.
Just to clarify the mockup :- Angle: Contain a list of degrees in 45 degree intervals. Distance: Contains a list of values including 0, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, .... 20 pt The mockup will work correctly in calc, impress and draw but wont in writer. With writer, there isnt an option to modify the transparency of the shadow found in the image dialog's border tab. Also the border section only has 4 shadow angle values - 45, 135, 225, and 315.
Turns out pts is a very small unit for the distance(15pts = 0.02 cm). Need for another set of preset values.
When the app is set to inches, in the dialog, the up and down arrows jump 0.02". When it set to centimeters, the up and down arrows jump by 0.10cm. When it set to points, the up and down arrows jump by 10pt. When it jumps by 10pt, it seem to be equivalent to 0.40cm. So it jumping by equivalent increments of 0.10cm is fine.

So i was doing some testing of the behaviour and noticed that if a shape had a previously set angle and distance, if the enabled button is disabled when clicking on the object, then angle and distance will both show 0, while transparency and color will be the correct values.
Sorry for the ux-advise noise.
