Not a bug but there seems to be nowhere to but refinement requests

In mail merge in Writer the only options are for a letter or an email. I run a hypnotherapy prtactice and merge my patient notes including free text fields into a multi page document for my case notes. To merge only requires that the database field is linked to a field on the document is there any reason why, without any convulted manouvers, the option of 'other document' cannot be given in the merge dialogue box?

With mailmerge "Letter" just means any Writer document - so the functionality is already there.

1) Open Writer document
2) F4 - choose datasource
3) Drag and drop your fields to where you want them in your Writer document.
4) Optionally save as a template
5) Ctrl-P - a message is displayed telling you that the document contains database fields and whether or not you want to do a mailmerge - answer yes.
6) Select the datasets you wish to insert in your Writer document, and choose output to file instead of printer.
7) Save the output file to a name of your choice.

The merged Writer document will be saved with the data merged into it (but not automatically re-opened).

Ctrl-P or File > Print is a pretty straightforward command.

If you want an alternative to what mailmerge can offer, use the ReportBuilder from within your ODB database file and create Reports - the output of these are Writer documents.

Thanks Alex, I have run a test with a filter in place and it seems to be working as I need it to work so it is worthwhile refining my patients' database and my case notes template.
