Description Richard 2015-02-01 20:27:10 UTC
I cannot print in duplex mode from Writer or Draw. The print progress bar shows page two and then freezes. Using various documents makes no difference. I have not tried printing from Impress, Base or Calc.

This computer is an HP Pavilion dv7 AMD processor.
Operating system is Linux Mint 17 64bit.

Front side only printing seems to work as expected. PDA export works as expected.

I have this same operating system and version of Libreoffice on a Dell Inspiron Desktop with Intel processor. Opening and printing the same documents in duplex mode works correctly. I have tried duplex printing on 3 different printers with the same result, so I think I can rule out printer drivers.

This is an upgrade from Libreoffice 4.2.x. Accomplished by adding Libreoffice ppa to software sources.

I have also uninstalled and re-installed Libreoffice on this computer with no change.

I am hopeful that this can be resolved. I have been using Libreoffice for several years and rely on it as our sole word processing program for our office. It is a great program. I like the new features of 4.4 and hope it is not necessary to revert to an earlier version.

I have done further testing. This problem only occurs when printer language type is postscript (level 1,2,3 or automatic does not make a difference). Printer Language type PDF works, but is very, very slow on long documents or multiple copies. I hope this additional information will be helpful.

The crash using postscript language type happens on both of the above mentioned computers. Postscript has always been my preference through Libreoffice 4.2.x I have not used version 4.3.x

@Richard,

On the HP w/AMD processor, have you cleared your user profile and tried with a fresh profile?

Or, have you done a parallel install as detailed here (and perhaps checked out a LO deb packaging for function) https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel/Linux

You're probably aware that printing from LO to PDF, and then printing the PDF duplex is a very common workaround when LO doesn't play nice with CUPS sessions.

Thanks V Stuart Foote.
I deleted the directory ~/.config/libreoffice and ran libreoffice again to allow it to create a fresh file. This did not change the outcome.

I appreciate your mention of creating a pdf and then printing that as a work around. It is one that I have used in previous cases, notably when I couldn't get the printer to pull a cover page from a separate tray from the body of the document. It is certainly workable. It is also faster than allowing LO to send pdf directly to the printer.

It does appear that LO 4.4.0.3 is having a problem with postscript. I can print to pdf output in duplex mode with out error. I have found this to be the case on both computers. When I switched the Dell to postscript, LO also crashed there. This leads me to think the problem may be more systemic and not be isolated to my installation(s).

For now, I have reinstalled 4.2.x on the HP - my work computer. It is working perfectly in duplex with postscript printing.

One more note. I have used templates that I have saved with printer settings set to postscript(level from driver) Normally, a check of this setting, printing a document made from template, will show that it remains set to postscript (level from driver). In 4.4.0.3 the same documents are reset to pdf output. It also shows duplex units not installed. It is not grayed out and can be set to installed. In my cups settings my printers are all set to duplex installed.

I will try a parallel installation straight from .deb file to see if there is perhaps a corrupted file in the ppa. I wasn't aware that was possible. I regret that it will be Friday or Saturday before I can do so. I will submit the outcome.

Thanks again (and sorry for the long post)
Richard
