Description ibraheemhaneef 2015-02-06 17:48:16 UTC
Hi.

I am using LibreOffice 3.5.4.2 Build ID: 350m1(Build:2)in Debian Wheezy 7.6.0 and I am having a couple of problems with Writer. I have a document that I wrote in MS Word but some fonts in it do not display correctly. One problem is that Arabic text with umlauts does not display correctly. For example, if the Arabic font that I am using (Al Qalam Quran Majeed) is in the first line of a page, the umlauts go up into the header area instead of staying with the letters. This happens anywhere on the page. The umlauts are too high above the letters.

Secondly an Arabic MSWord .doc document which contains internal hyperlinks takes almost half an hour to open and then the links appear as errors. I have the correct fonts installed.

Kindly advise.

Thanks.

IH

3.5.4 is an old version. Do you reproduce this with a newer LO version? (last stable one is 4.3.5)?

It is a good practice to upgrade to the latest version of any software to check for fixed bugs before creating a report. The 3.5 series has been in End of Life status since 2012. See https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan#3.5

Thank you for your suggestion. I am coming from a Windows environment and downloaded and installed Debian last August (2014) along with all the accompanying software. I wrongly assumed that I would receive the latest version of Libre Office too. Following your advice I checked the Help section of Writer and it directed me to go to help section and enable automatic or manual update. Unfortunately, there is no such option at the place suggested. I have been updating all the updates suggested every other day by the system and again wrongly assumed that all software would also be updated automatically. Since I do not have an automatic or manual update option in this verion of LibreOffice I shall download it manually from the LibreOffice website and and post the result.
Thank you.

Thanks for your help. I tried to update LibreOffice but it would not upgrade. I searched the internet for any possible way to update to the latest version, but found no solutions. The LibreOffice website had an installation help which suggested that I uninstall the previous version and then install the new one. I did that too, but I recieved no less than FORTY seperate windows of error messages. It seems Debian has an upgrade cycle and I will only get the latest version whenever that comes around. I am very disappointed. Could you please suggest another flavor of Linux which uses the latest version of LibreOffice?
Thank you.

It's because you use Debian stable. Stable is appropriate for servers.
Personally I use Debian testing.
But some would advise Mint, OpenSuse, Fedora, Arch etc.
Make your own choice but take a look to LO version proposed before! :-)

Let's put this one to WFM for the moment.
Don't hesitate to reopen this tracker if you can reproduce it with a recent LO version.
