Description Sion 2015-07-10 12:21:08 UTC
Currently you can ad/delete a row/column and you can split/merge a cell.

The new feature is: Split table (and Merge table).
You select a row or column in the table, and click "Split table" and it cuts the table into 2 separate tables.

Why is this useful?
* if you happens to delete that last line break between 2 tables (depending on settings, i think) they will merge into one, and it is very hard (if not impossible) to separate the tables again, this feature will solve that

* If you suddenly realize that the current table would work better if it was split into 2 (or more) tables it would often require that you make an entirely new table and manually move the data, with this feature you only need to cut the table where it suits best.

I found the Split table function in the right click menu, but could you please add it as an icon too in the toolbar for tables, thanks!

You are speaking about tables in Writer?
Comment 3 Regina Henschel 2015-07-12 00:30:46 UTC
Then the feature already exists. It is in menu Table.

For 5.0.0rc and current master Split Table has been removed from context menu, so it now is only available as an action from the Table -> Split Table main menu item.

On the Table toolbar the associated .uno command and its dialog has never been available to add as a Visible button, or as a user Customization.

Believe it would be reasonable UI, and good UX, to provide it as an option for customizing the Table toolbar, especially with general efforts to rework context menu.

Setting New and back to Writer.

They have ever been available for customization and still are available. Find the commands "Merge Table" and "Split Table" in the category "Table".

It is true, that they have no associated icon, but that applies to other commands too. I see the issue as "Worksforme".

Oops, right you are--they are there and can be added without issue, no icon. I was looking for them as an unchecked command already on the tool bar, and forgot to search the Add dialog.

Still with removal of "split table" from the context menu, wouldn't it make sense to create a pair of Icons, and have them resident as checked (or unchecked) tools on the Table toolbar?

Split table button has been in the table toolbar since 5.1. Merge table wasnt added as there isnt an associated icon for it or space.
