Dear all,

I would like to ask you for your opinion on a feature to rename the opened file directly from the "File" menu.

At least on Linux, the dialog window of GTK does not allow the direct renaming of files. What is then necessary is to open a file manager and navigate to the file to rename it.

Having a renaming option directly implemented in LO would speed up the process of renaming files.

What do you think?

Thankfully,

Robert

I'm not a fan but this is left for UX team - setting to enhancement, NEW and requesting their input. You can just do file -> save as and then later delete the original file...same result without adding yet one more thing to our menus.

I appreciate your opinion Joel!

As you say, "Save As" leaves me with one extra step to be taken that would be minimised by adding a single new menu entry. Certainly a trade off to think about. I am curious of what the UX team finds.

I disagree:
1/ renaming files is function of the file manager, no need to implement that in each application software;
2/ File menu in LibreOffice is already too long to add another entry;
3/ not sure if renaming a file without closing it is safe.

So for me, it is a no go.

Best regards. JBF

The use case is not clear: Why should anyone want to rename a file that just has been created? And, in general, I agree with Jean-Baptiste that file management belongs to the OS.

(as a user) I would like to add that, when moving/renaming a document using the file manager, it disappears from the list of 'last opened files' which is shown at the "Start Center". Thus, it would be nice to have this option (move and/or rename a document) in the Start Center, maintaining the ("new") document in this list.

Agree with JBF and Heiko that this is a file manager issue and shouldnt be implemented in LO.

I can see the scenario where a user names a doc, e.g. Untitled1.odt, and then wants to rename it to something else or move it to another location, without having to use Save As which makes another copy of the file and also without renaming it outside of LO, which would cause LO to lose the doc's location and it being gone from the recent list location. A user would face this same scenario in any application they use (e.g. gedit, gimp), but atleast good desktop environments (e.g. windows, likely kde) give you access to delete a file from the file management dialogs, so Save As would be the best option to go with.

Thanks to all of you for your comments.

I was discussing this issue mainly from a perspective of a Gnome/GTK user. Luckily they seem to have integrated a renaming feature in their recent file chooser dialog: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325150

Warmly,

Robert
